108 is the number the tradition returns to more often than any other. It counts the beads, the names of God, the canonical Upanishads, the vital points of the body, the divisions of the sky. Ask why that number and not another, and you get several answers, some of them structural, one of them genuinely strange.
The bead you do not count
A mala has 108 beads for counting and one more that is never counted. The extra bead is larger, often tasselled, and is called the meru, after the mountain at the centre of the world, or the guru bead.
When the fingers reach it, the practitioner does not pass over it. They stop, turn the mala around, and go back the way they came. You never cross the guru.
So a hundred and eight is not a lap. It is a distance out and a distance back, and the still point at the centre is not part of the count at all.
The number that matters is 108. The 109th bead is not a number. It is where you turn around.
Why 108 and not 100
The most concrete answer sits in Vedic astronomy, and it is structural rather than symbolic.
The Vedic sky is divided into 27 nakshatras, the lunar mansions, one for roughly each night the Moon takes to complete its circuit. Each nakshatra is then divided into four quarters, called padas, meaning feet or steps.
That gives 108 padas in a complete circuit of the heavens. This is not a later interpretation laid over the number. It is the working structure of Jyotish, the Vedic system of astronomy and astrology, and every chart cast in that system uses it.
There is a second arithmetic of the same kind: 12 signs of the zodiac multiplied by the 9 planets of Vedic reckoning also gives 108. Both are real divisions of the sky used in daily practice, and both land on the same figure.
The shape of the number itself
108 has a property that is difficult to shrug off once you have seen it.
The first three numbers, each raised to itself, multiplied together. There is no other small number that falls out of an arrangement quite that clean.
Notice what is sitting inside it: 27 is there, as three cubed. The same 27 as the nakshatras. The tradition did not need to construct that relationship, and there is no evidence anyone set out to. It is simply a property of the number, waiting to be found.
108 is also unusually divisible for its size, which is part of why it is practical: it divides evenly by 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 27, 36 and 54. A recitation of 108 can be broken into halves, thirds, quarters, ninths or twelfths without remainder. And the interior angle of a regular pentagon is exactly 108 degrees.
The 108 names
One of the oldest devotional forms in the tradition is the Ashtottarashata Namavali, the litany of 108 names. Each major deity has one: 108 names of Vishnu, of Shiva, of Lakshmi, of Ganesha, of Durga.
These are not synonyms. Each name describes an attribute, an act, or a form, and reciting the list is a way of circling a thing that cannot be said directly. To name something 108 times from 108 angles is to approach it the only way the tradition thinks it can be approached.
The same number governs the canon. The Muktika lists 108 Upanishads, and that list is the standard reckoning of the corpus.
107 points, and the mind
Ayurveda maps the body by its marma, the vital points where flesh, vessel, sinew, bone and joint meet, and where life force is understood to gather. The Sushruta Samhita, the classical surgical treatise, describes 107 of them.
The tradition then adds one more. The 108th marma is not a place on the body at all: it is the mind.
This is the same structure as the mala. A hundred and seven things you can point to, and one more that completes the count without being a thing of the same kind. Both times, the number is finished by something that stands slightly outside it.
The astronomical ratios
Now the strange part, and it needs handling carefully because it is repeated constantly and rarely with any precision.
Three ratios in the solar system come out close to 108:

Those figures are real. They are also approximate, and they move: both orbits are elliptical, so the first two vary through the year, the Moon's ratio swinging between roughly 105 and 116.
What this is not is evidence that ancient astronomers knew the size of the Sun. They did not, and could not have. No text gives these ratios, and the number appears in the tradition for the reasons set out above, which are about the divisions of the sky and the arithmetic of the number itself.
What it is, is a coincidence of a fairly remarkable kind. The number a tradition chose for counting prayers turns out to sit close to the ratio that lets the Moon and the Sun appear almost exactly the same size from the ground, which is the reason a total solar eclipse is possible at all.
We think that is more interesting stated honestly than dressed up as ancient knowledge. It does not need the help.
Where the number lives
Once you know to look, 108 is everywhere in practice, not just in texts.
A round of japa, the repetition of a mantra, is 108. Temple bells are rung 108 times. A cycle of sun salutations is 108. Prostrations are counted in 108. Several pilgrimage systems name 108 sacred sites, and there are 108 gopis in the Vrindavan tradition, and 108 divya desams, the temples of the Vaishnava canon.
The number is not decoration in any of these. It is the unit of a complete effort, the amount that constitutes having done the thing properly.
Why we named a circle after it
Our ceremonies hold a fixed number of names, and the numbers we use are 27, 108 and 432: the mansions of the sky, the beads of the mala, and the length of the present age. Each is four times the one before it.
The circle of 108 sits in the middle, and it is the one that carries the most familiar weight. A person whose name is in it is one of a hundred and eight, which is the same count as the beads a practitioner has been turning between their fingers for three thousand years.
